B-25 Mitchell Models

The B-25 medium bomber is a legendary aircraft that played a crucial role in World War II. It was famously used by General Jimmy Doolittle in the Tokyo Raid on April 18, 1942, and it saw action in every combat area around the world, including with Dutch, British, Chinese, Russian, and Australian forces in addition to the United States. The B-25 was originally designed for level bombing from medium altitudes, but it was widely used in the Pacific Theater for bombing Japanese airfields and beach emplacements from low altitudes, as well as for strafing and skip bombing enemy shipping. Built by North American Aviation, the B-25 made its first flight on August 19, 1940, and the United States Army Air Corps accepted the first five B-25s in February 1941. By the end of the war, North American Aviation had produced a total of 9,816 B-25s at its plants in California and Kansas. The aircraft underwent several modifications during its service, including the addition of a 75mm cannon and fixed .50 caliber guns in the nose of the G model, and the addition of forward firing .50 caliber guns in cheek blisters on the H model. The J model, the most numerous variant, returned to its original configuration as a level bomber with a transparent nose featuring one flexible and two fixed .50 caliber guns. However, the demands of the Pacific Theater led to field-modified J models and production versions featuring a solid nose with eight fixed .50 caliber guns for low-level attack, allowing the aircraft to devastate vehicles and shipping with up to 14 forward firing heavy machine guns.
