Skipjack Class Submarine Models

The Skipjack class was a type of nuclear submarine used by the US Navy from the late 1950s to the early 1990s. These submarines were named after their lead vessel, the USS Skipjack, and were notable for introducing the teardrop hull and the S5W reactor to the US nuclear submarine fleet. The Skipjacks were the fastest US nuclear submarines until the Los Angeles class entered service in 1974. Each Skipjack-class submarine cost around $40 million to build and was designed for service during the Vietnam War and the Cold War. The Skipjack class saw active service until the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the exception of the USS Scorpion, which was lost at sea in 1968 along with all 99 crew members on board. The Skipjack class was authorized in the FY 1956 new construction program and the first vessel, the USS Skipjack, was commissioned in April 1959. It achieved the title of "world's fastest submarine" after initial sea trials in March 1959, although the actual speed attained was classified. Despite being surpassed in speed by the Los Angeles class, the Skipjack class remained a significant part of the US Navy's submarine fleet until it was retired in the late 1980s and early 1990s..
