James Madison-class

The James Madison class of submarine was a type of fleet ballistic missile submarine that was developed from the Lafayette class. These submarines were designed to carry the Polaris A-3 missile, but were later modified to carry the Poseidon C-3 missile in the 1970s. Six James Madison class submarines (along with six Benjamin Franklin class submarines) were further modified in the late 1970s and early 1980s to carry the Trident I C-4 missile. These submarines, along with the George Washington, Ethan Allen, Lafayette, and Benjamin Franklin classes, made up the "41 for Freedom" group, which served as the US Navy's primary nuclear

deterrent force until the late 1980s. The submarines were decommissioned between 1986 and 1995 due to a combination of SALT II treaty limitations, age, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. One James Madison class submarine, the Sam Rayburn, has been converted into a Moored Training Ship and remains in commission, though it no longer has a missile compartment. It is stationed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia.
