EA-18 Growler

The Boeing EA-18G Growler is a specialized version of the F/A-18F Super Hornet designed for electronic warfare. It is primarily used by the United States Navy and was introduced in 2009, with a small number also being purchased by the Royal Australian Air Force in 2017. The Growler is equipped with electronic warfare capabilities provided by Northrop Grumman and is used to jam enemy communications and radar systems. It is capable of carrying a variety of weapons, including air-to-air missiles and bombs. The Growler has seen use in a number of conflicts, including Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is considered a highly effective electronic warfare platform and is the only remaining manned tactical jammer in the U.S. military. The Australian Growlers are unique in that they are equipped with the AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR targeting pod and additional air-to-air missiles. The Growler has faced some issues in service, including engine fires and problems with its wing structure, but has undergone upgrades to extend its service life.
The Growler is capable of performing both escort jamming and standoff jamming missions and has a similar flight performance to the F/A-18E/F. It shares many components with the Super Hornet, including the airframe, radar, and weapon systems, but it also includes additional electronics such as the AN/ALQ-218 wideband receivers and the ALQ-99 jamming pods. These provide the aircraft with a full spectrum electronic warfare suite that can detect and jam various surface-to-air threats. However, the effectiveness of these pods may be limited against newer, emerging threats.
