The VAQ-130 Zappers & the EA-6B Prowler Legacy

The VAQ-130 Zappers are the oldest electronic warfare squadron in the U.S. Navy, originally commissioned in 1959 as Carrier Early Warning Squadron 13 (VAW-13) flying the AD-5Q Skyraider. Transitioning to the EKA-3B Skywarrior and later to the EA-6B Prowler, the Zappers have played a critical role in airborne electronic attack missions across major U.S. military operations.

By 1993, VAQ-130 was deployed aboard the USS Eisenhower (CVN-69), flying EA-6B Prowlers in support of Operation Provide Promise, assisting humanitarian relief efforts in Bosnia-Herzegovina. That same year, VAQ-130 became the first U.S. Navy combat unit to integrate female aviators into its ranks, marking a historic moment in naval aviation.
