The T-33 was designed to meet the needs of pilots transitioning to jet aircraft and the high altitude environment in which they flew. It was created by adding a 29-inch plug to the front of the wing of a P-80, the Air Force’s first operational jet fighter, and a 12-inch plug behind the wing to create space for a second cockpit with dual controls. Ejection seats and 235-gallon jettisonable centerline tip tanks were also added. The T-33 performed even better than the P-80, with faster climbing and cruising abilities and slightly higher speed. Initially designated as a variant of the P-80/F80, the TP-80C/TF-80C, but was later renamed the T-33A. The version used by the U.S. Navy was designated the TV-2.
