Patrol Squadron One (VP-1), also known as the “Screaming Eagles,” is an active aviation squadron of the United States Navy based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, United States. The squadron operates the Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft and was established on February 15, 1943 as Bombing Squadron 128 (VB-128). It has undergone several redesignations over the years, including Patrol Bombing Squadron 128 (VPB-128) in 1944, Patrol Squadron 128 (VP-128) in 1946, Medium Patrol Squadron (Landplane) 1 (VP-ML-1) in 1946, and finally, Patrol Squadron ONE (VP-1) in 1948. The squadron has had a total of 5 designations, with the previous ones being disestablished or redesignated in 1922, 1926, 1939, and 1944. The squadron had the call sign “BACKDOOR” during the 1960s and 1970s.
