North Island is a historical U.S. Navy base located in San Diego, California. It was established as a Naval Air Station in 1917 and was originally known as Naval Air Station San Diego until 1955. North Island has a significant place in aviation history, as it was where many of the U.S. Navy’s first aviators, including Lieutenant Theodore Ellyson, were trained as early as 1911.

Before being designated as a Naval Air Station, North Island was an uninhabited sand flat that had been used for horseback riding and hunting by guests of the Hotel del Coronado. The island was originally referred to as North Coronado Island, as it was separated from South Coronado by a shallow bay known as the Spanish Bight. In 1886, North and South Coronado were purchased by a developer to become a residential resort. While South Coronado became the city of Coronado, North Coronado was never developed and was instead leased by Glenn Curtiss to establish a flying school.

The Navy was invited to use the site for aviation training in 1912 and opened a station, but abandoned it shortly thereafter. The Army then established an aviation school in 1913, and it wasn’t until 1917 that Congress appropriated the land for two airfields. The Navy started with a tent city known as “Camp Trouble,” but as time went on, it shared the island with the Army’s Signal Corps, Air Service, and Air Corps Rockwell Field until 1937 when the Army left and the Navy expanded its operations to cover the whole of North Island.

North Island is the birthplace of many aviation milestones, including the first seaplane flight in 1911, the first mid-air refueling, and the first non-stop transcontinental flight, both in 1923. The flight of Charles A. Lindbergh from New York to Paris in May 1927, one of history’s most famous aviation feats, originated at Rockwell Field on North Island. The island also housed the base that supported the operating forces in the Pacific during World War II, which included over a dozen aircraft carriers, the Coast Guard, Army, Marines, and Seabees.

The city of Coronado became home to most of the aircraft factory workers and dependents of the base which was operating around the clock. Major USO entertainment shows and bond drives were held weekly at the Ship’s Service auditorium, which was later replaced by the 2,100 seat Lowry Theater. Famous people stationed here or on ships home ported here during the war years included Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Guy Madison, and Bob Hope.

In conclusion, North Island has a significant place in aviation history, and its contributions to the development of naval aviation are well recognized. It is the birthplace of many aviation milestones, and the list of American military pilots trained at North Island reads like the Who’s Who of aviation. The island is also significant for its role in supporting the operating forces in the Pacific during World War II.
