VP-42, known as the Sea Dragons, was established in 1946. Initially, the squadron flew with World War II aircraft like the PBM Mariner. Later, they transitioned to more advanced planes. Throughout history, VP-42 served in various locations, supporting military operations and providing vital reconnaissance.

Moreover, in the 1950s, the squadron played an essential role during the Cold War. They focused on anti-submarine warfare, helping to protect maritime interests.
