The 416th Flight Test Squadron is a unit of the United States Air Force based at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It was reactivated in 1989 for flight testing of the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, inheriting the role of the 6516th Test Squadron that was also based at Edwards. The unit’s primary role is to test different weapon systems and specialized equipment on the F-16 in different production versions. However, it also performs other tasks, such as acting as chase planes for other aircraft test programs, helping with the development of the MLU upgrade package for older F-16 models, leading the flight test effort in the development of the AN/ASQ-213 HARM Targeting System, and testing software updates for the F-16 operating system. Former members of the 416th who have become NASA astronauts include Mike Bloomfield, Duane Carey, Rex Walheim, Jim Dutton, and Nick Hague.
