The 498th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was with Air Defense Command stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base, California. It was inactivated on 30 September 1968.
were reassigned to the 84th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron.

In August 1955, the 498th FIS was reestablished as a US Air Force Air Defense Command interceptor squadron, located at Geiger Field in Washington. Its primary mission was to safeguard the Pacific Northwest, with its fleet initially consisting of F-86D Sabres, which were later upgraded to F-102s in 1957 and then F-106s in 1959, making it the first squadron to deploy the Delta Dart.

At the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, one-third of the squadron’s forces equipped with nuclear-tipped missiles were dispersed to Paine Air Force Base, a move made before President John F. Kennedy publicly announced the presence of missiles in Cuba. In March 1963, when two Soviet bombers flew over Alaska, the 498th FIS and its sister unit, the 318th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, deployed ten F-106s in Operation White Shoes to intercept the intruders. However, sustaining these aircraft for an extended period strained the combat readiness of the 325th wing back at McChord, and a maintenance detachment was eventually established to support the planes in Alaska. In 1965, the unit’s planes returned home after an upgrade from the 1st Fighter Wing, concluding Operation White Shoes.

The 498th FIS relocated to McChord AFB in 1963 and to Paine Field in 1966. It moved again to Hamilton AFB, California, in 1968, where it was deactivated on the same day. The squadron’s planes were reassigned to the 84th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron.
