This squadron served 2.5 years of combat duty during Vietnam with a focus on the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos. Serving with distinction it earned numerous awards to include the Presidential Unit Citation. The unit was assigned to the 56th Air Commando Wing. Flying this vintage WWII era attack bomber, the 609th was responsible for interdiction of truck traffic on the Ho Chi Minh trail. Their callsign was Nimrod. During their service they have flown over 7,000 combat missions. They were deactivated 1 December 1969.
