The 31st Rescue Squadron was established on October 17, 1952 as the 31st Air Rescue Squadron. They were responsible for performing combat rescues in Southeast Asia between 1965 and 1966, and also operated the Joint Rescue Coordination Center for Thirteenth Air Force between April 1967 and July 1975. In addition to their rescue operations, the 31st also took part in disaster relief missions in the Philippines in July 1990. From 1992 to 2001, the 31st Rescue Squadron was deployed at Osan Air Base in Korea as a special operations squadron, while its headquarters at the 353d Special Operations Group was stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. After being inactivated for a period of time, the squadron was redesignated as the 31st Rescue Squadron in 2003 and stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, under the 18th Wing.
