Strike Fighter Squadron 25, also known as the “Fist of the Fleet,” is a proud member of Naval Aviation with a rich history dating back to 1943. Originally commissioned as Torpedo Squadron 17, the squadron participated in World War II, flying TBM and SB2C attack bombers from the USS HORNET. After the war, the squadron was re-designated as VA-65 and transitioned to the propeller-driven AD-1 “Sky Raider,” known to pilots as the “Spad.” VA-65 deployed aboard the USS CORAL SEA, USS MIDWAY, and USS BOXER and made an impressive combat record during the Korean War.

In 1959, the squadron was re-designated as VA-25 and moved to NAS Lemoore, California in 1962. From 1965 to 1968, VA-25 made three deployments to Southeast Asia from the USS CORAL SEA, flying over 3,000 combat missions and dropping over 10 million pounds of ordnance on enemy targets. VA-25 was the last propeller-driven tactical squadron in the Navy when they transitioned to the A-7B Corsair II in 1968.

In the following years, VA-25 made two more combat cruises aboard USS RANGER in Southeast Asia and expended over 15 million pounds of ordnance on targets in Laos and Vietnam. In 1983, the squadron began training in the new F/A-18A Hornet and was re-designated as Strike Fighter Squadron 25 (VFA-25) in 1983.

VFA-25 Fist of the Fleet deployed on multiple carrier and participated in several operation, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH, Operation DESERT STRIKE, and Exercise RUGGED NAUTILUS and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM to mention some. VFA-25 played a crucial role in the operation by delivering over 300,000 lbs of ordnance during the operation. The “Fist of the Fleet” is a proud and accomplished member of Naval Aviation with a history of excellence and dedication to protecting our nation.
