An F/A-18C Hornet aircraft of Fighter Attack Squadron 106 (VFA-106 ...VFA-106, or Strike Fighter Squadron 106, is the East Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron responsible for training Navy and Marine Corps pilots and Weapon Systems Officers (WSOs) to fly the F/A-18 Hornet. The training program, which lasts for nine months, starts every six weeks and includes a class of 8-12 new pilots and Naval Flight Officers. The curriculum covers basic air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, and culminates in day/night carrier qualification and subsequent assignment to operational Hornet squadrons.

VFA-106 also serves as a transition training squadron for experienced naval aviators, who are moving on from other aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat and S-3 Viking to the newer Super Hornet and F-35C. Aircrew returning from non-flying assignments undergo refresher training at VFA-106 before rejoining the fleet. Along with the Center of Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU), VFA-106 also trains maintenance personnel and provides replacement aircraft to fleet units.

There are about 1200 Navy and Marine Corps personnel, along with foreign instructors and students from countries like United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany, assigned to VFA-106. The squadron is equipped with over 90 F/A-18s of various models, including a permanent detachment at NAS Key West, Florida, where the squadron often deploys for fighter training. The squadron also frequently deploys 12 aircraft to NAS Fallon, Nevada, and NAF El Centro, California, as well as various aircraft carriers for carrier qualifications (CQ). The West Coast counterparts of VFA-106 are VFA-122 and VFA-125 at NAS Lemoore, California and VMFAT-101 at MCAS Miramar, California.
