Per Skipper CDR Glen E Simerly CO VC-1 1974 t0 1975.-

“After it was painted, which took two weeks, we parked it in the street at the parade grounds for my change of command, when I began to take command of the squadron, in 1974 and 1975.  When Admiral Baldwin to out of his vehicle for the ceremony, he walked all around it, we were getting anxious, but when he said “nice job”, I knew I was ok.  There were only two of these aircraft ever painted that way and VC-1 had both of them  01 had my name on it, and 00 had Admiral Noel Gaylor on it.

I flew it almost every day attacking fleet aircraft and ships in a “Top Gun”

Type attack.  I had an aerial photographer in the rear seat that took their photos during the attacks.

There were a number of dignitaries that flew with me during that year, in the back seat, including Ross Perot’s son and CINCPAC the four star Admiral

In charge of all forces from San Diego to The Far East.

I really enjoyed that tour and we really “upped” the “readiness” of all fleet units within 300 miles of Hawaii.”
