The USS Kamehameha (SSBN-642) was a Benjamin Franklin-class ballistic missile submarine that served in the United States Navy. It was the only ship in the Navy to be named after Kamehameha I, the first King of Hawaii, and one of only two ships in the US to be named after a monarch. The ship was originally commissioned as a ballistic missile submarine, equipped with 16 Poseidon missiles and 10-12 Mark 48 heavy torpedoes. It was later reclassified as an attack submarine and redesignated as SSN-642. The ship’s motto was “Imua,” which roughly translates to “go forth and conquer,” and it was known as “Kamfish” by its crew. The USS Kamehameha was built at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California and was launched in January 1965. It conducted deterrence patrols during the Cold War and was based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii until 1970, when it was transferred to the Atlantic Fleet. It passed through the Panama Canal and arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, where it served with Submarine Squadron 18. During its time in service, the USS Kamehameha received several awards, including the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Navy Expeditionary Medal.
