The USS Henry L. Stimson (SSBN-655) was a Benjamin Franklin-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after Henry L. Stimson, who served as both U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Secretary of War. It was the only ship in the United States Navy to be named after him. The vessel was constructed by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut and launched on November 13, 1965. It was commissioned on August 20, 1966 with Captain Richard E. Jortberg commanding the Blue Crew and Commander Robert H. Weeks commanding the Gold Crew.

The Henry L. Stimson was initially assigned to Submarine Squadron 10 at New London, Connecticut and conducted its first strategic deterrent patrol with the Blew Crew on February 23, 1967, armed with Polaris A3 ballistic missiles. In 1973, it was transferred to Rota, Spain, with one visit to Charleston in 1978 for battery replacement. In 1980, it underwent a Trident Missile conversion and was based out of Kings Bay, Georgia, with its crew based in Charleston, South Carolina until its decommissioning in May 1993. The vessel was scrapped at the Navy’s Nuclear-Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program in Bremerton, Washington in August 1994.
