RVAH-9 Hoot Owls was a Reconnaissance Attack (Heavy) Squadron of the U.S. Navy. Originally established as Composite Squadron Nine (VC-9) on 15 January 1953, it was redesignated as Heavy Attack Squadron Nine (VAH-9) on 1 November 1955 and was redesignated as Reconnaissance Attack (Heavy) Squadron Nine (RVAH-9) on 3 June 1964. The squadron was disestablished on 30 September 1977.

RVAH-9 was established as VC-9 on January 15, 1953. At that time, the squadron had two TEN Avengers and a P2V Neptune, and a personnel complement of 60. VC-9 was responsible for the Navy’s first aerial refueling operation, in which they refueled F-2H Banshees from the USS MIDWAY using an AJ Savage. In addition to refueling, VC-9’s primary mission was high altitude bombing. The squadron, based in Sanford, Florida, deployed on the aircraft carriers HORNET, CORAL SEA, and RANDOLPH. In November 1955, the official designation of VC-9 was changed to VAH-9 (Heavy Attack Squadron 9). VAH-9 made its first deployment to the Mediterranean Sea on the USS TICONDEROGA in December-May 1955. In January 1957, VAH-9 received its first A3D Skywarrior aircraft and deployed with the USS SARATOGA to assist the Sixth Fleet during the 1958 Lebanon Crisis. The squadron flew a total of 2700 hours during this deployment, averaging 33 hours per day. After five deployments with the SARATOGA, VAH-9 transitioned to the A-5 and was redesignated as RVAH-9 in April 1964. The squadron deployed on the SARATOGA in December 1964 for another deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. In October 1965, RVAH-9 deployed on the USS RANGER for a deployment to the Western Pacific, where they flew 480 missions, including pre-strike reconnaissance and bomb damage assessment in South and North Vietnam. RVAH-9 made deployments to the Mediterranean Sea with the SARATOGA in 1970 and 1971, and was based in Rota, Spain for these deployments. In 1968, the squadron moved its homeport to Albany, Georgia and deployed on the RANGER for a deployment to the Western Pacific. RVAH-9 was based in Key West, Florida starting in January 1974 and deployed on the USS INDEPENDENCE in the Mediterranean Sea in the same year. In May 1975, the squadron participated in Operation Solid Shield on the SARATOGA with CVW-3, and deployed on the USS NIMITZ in June for initial ship training and a North Atlantic cruise. RVAH-9 deployed on the NIMITZ again in January 1976 for carrier qualifications, type training, and ORE, and participated in another Operation Solid Shield in May. The squadron deployed on the NIMITZ for its maiden cruise to the Mediterranean Sea in July. From February to September 1977, RVAH-9 was based at NAS Key West and conducted a variety of operational and training missions, including photography for the Environmental Resources Institute and MATWING 1, and tasked training missions for TRAEX-77. RVAH-9 was disestablished on September 30, 1977.

The squadron was assigned to these home stations:

NAAS Sanford / NAS Sanford, Florida
NAS Albany, Georgia
NAS Key West, Florida
Aircraft Assignment
