The Naval Support Activity, DaNang, (NAVSUPPACT, DNG), a unit of the Service Force, Pacific Fleet and Naval Forces, Vietnam was established on October 15, 1965 to support the Third Marine Amphibious Force (III MAF).
The Navy’s largest overseas Shore Command supports some 140,000 Free World Fighting Forces, including 80,000 U.S. Marines in I Corps, the five northern provinces of South Vietnam. The command has grown from not much more than an anchorage to a bustling deep draft sea port handling a total of one million tons of cargo every three months. Sixty percent is retained in DaN ang while forty percent is shipped up and down the 200 miles of coast.
On October 15, 1966, the Thong Nhat Deep Water Piers complex was officially dedicated. The two piers, 90 by 60 feet, plus a special De Long Pier, more than doubled the cargo capacity. One of the world’s largest warehouses is at NA VSUPFACT, DaNang. It grew from six butler buildings in mud and sand to an 18 8-unit butler building complex with more than 570,000 square feet of covered storage. Five reefer banks with 110,000 square feet grew to 13 reefer banks with more than 350,000 square feet of area. In addition, there is more than 500,000 square feet of hard-surface open storage at NAVSUPPACT, DaNang’s Covered Storage. From an original 1,412 officers and men, NAVSUPPACT has grown to a force of 8,000 Navy personnel and more than 3,000 Vietnamese civilian employees. The Command’s operations have expanded to include detachments. at Dong Ha/Cua Viet, Phu Bai/Hue/Tan My, and the largest detachment of 1,000 Navy personnel in Chu Lai, a port with one sixth the capacity of DaNang. .
Camp Tien Sha provides messing and berthing facilities at the foot of Monkey Mountain for more than 4,000 personnel. A total of 1,600 live on
three barracks ships in DaNang harbor.
