Naval Weapons Test Squadron Point Mugu was established in May 1995 after being established in October 1994 as a result of the Naval Air Warfare Center competency realignment. The squadron is the principal Naval flight and ground test support activity for all Point Mugu sited Naval Air Systems Command aircraft and aircraft functions, including logistics and training support. The squadron is ideally located near the largest sea test range in the world, and only minutes away by aircraft from extensive Edwards and China Lake overland test range complexes. Squadron assets routinely deploy world wide to meet unique weapons testing needs at remote ranges and to provide fleet support.

Squadron aircraft include the NF-14A/B/D, QF-4N/S, NP-3D, DC-130A, and the SA227 Metroliner. F-14 Tomcats are utilized in the development testing of new weapons and hardware, as well as software and mission planning systems. QF-4 Phantoms can be conventionally piloted as test platforms or flown via remote control as unmanned aerial targets. P-3 Orion aircraft provide the capability to track targets in support of various missions through use of an extensive suite of sophisticated telemetry, radar, and optical systems, in addition to providing support missions for the Fleet. The DC-130 Hercules provides the capability to launch sub scale aerial targets, as well as airborne logistics support. Metroliners provide key round trip passenger service to China Lake on a daily basis, and to other locales as required.
