“I was a rescue swimmer attached to HSL-35 at NAS North Island our helo crew was on an ASW training mission and were refueling at San Clemente Island when air controllers contacted us in regards to an F-14 crew that had to eject. Radio attempts with other helo’s in the area did not work so they requested our services. Our aircraft was actually down for night SAR missions, but due to being the only aircraft available the decision was made to attempt the rescue with the co-pilots main assignment keeping altitutude updates for the hover. There was an E-2 Hawkeye aircraft over the downed crew and they vectored us in.

The F-14 crew in the water was hard to spot initially because the only signal device that was working other than their radio was one strobe light. We got overheard and I lowered the hoist, got the first one in the helo and strapped into my sensor operator seat, lowered the hoist and got the second one in. Because of the distance back to NAS North Island we were able to land on the USS Truxton for fuel. Since both aviators were in good shape with no major injuries it was determined we would fly them back to NAS North Island and have EMS crew transport to Balboa Naval Hospital. Being in H-2’s we were not the best equipped helo for rescues but that night we were the only ones available. There was an H-3 and H-60 (which were just starting to be flying from NAS North Island) but the controllers could not get a hold of them due the altitude while they were on the ASW range off the coast of San Clemente Island. Just a couple of days later the CO of VF-211 came down to us to thank us personally for the rescue.” Harry Knight 1984
