HELICOPTER SEA COMBAT SQUADRON (HSC) 28

Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO EIGHT (HSC-28) was established as Helicopter Combat Support Squadron EIGHT (HC-8) on 3 December 1984, with four H-46Ds and 60 officers and enlisted personnel. It was redesignated a Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) on 1 April 2005. HSC-28 is subordinate to Commander, Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic onboard Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

The Dragon Whales’ mission is critical to the United States Navy’s ability to project credible, flexible and forward deployed maritime power. At sea HSC-28 performs Strike Warfare, Search and Rescue, Anti-Surface Warfare, support of Special Operation Forces, and all manner of combat logistics and fleet support operations to include: vertical replenishment, passenger, mail, cargo transport, and Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection. Additionally, from their homeport in Norfolk, Virginia, the Dragon Whales provide fleet support to Navy, Army, and Air Force units located along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts.

Squadron aircraft and personnel deploy on a “team concept” as a sea going detachment consisting of 4-10 pilots, 20-45 enlisted members, one maintenance officer and 1-3 MH-60S Knight Hawk helicopters. Detachments deploy aboard Amphibious Assault ships (LHA and LHD), Fast-Combat Support ships (T-AOE), Dry Cargo/Ammunition ships (T-AKE) and Command/Joint Command ships (LCC/JCC) to the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, and Arabian Gulf.

Dragon Whales are known for the professionalism and ability to accomplish every mission; on time, on target, every time.
