Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron [HMM-772] was activated as Helicopter Squadron 772 at the Marine Air Rescue Training Command at Willow Grove, PA. in April 1958. In April 1962, the squadron was redesignated Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 772 and reassigned three years later, in 1965 to Marine Aircraft Group 46, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.

From 1965 to 1967, the squadron participated in ATDs at Indiantown Gap, PA and Camp Lejeune, NC. Numerous 1,000 hour pins from Sikorsky Aircraft Company were awarded during that period to many pilots for flight time in the SH-34 and many flight hours were logged while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. The squadron was recognized in 1968 for achieving a Ten year Accident Free Flying Record. The squadron was relocated to NAS Lakehurst, NJ in 1970. The following year, the squadron transitioned to the CH-53 and was redesignated Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 772 [HMH-772].

In 1972, HMH-772 was relocated to NAS Willow Grove, PA. where it joined Marine Aircraft Group 49, 4th Marine Air Wing. That year, the squadron participated in flood relief operations in Pennsylvania. Two aircrews received citations in 1974 for their participation in a SAR effort in NY. The squadron was deployed for ATDs in Atlanta, GA(1976); New River, NC(1977); Santa Ana, CA(1978); and Yuma, AZ(1979). The squadron was deployed to New River, NC for Reserve Operations in 1980. The squadron was at New River, NC in 1981 and then at Yuma, AZ in 1982.

HMH-772 took part in NATO Exercise in Norway during 1983. The squadron was awarded a Meritorious Unit Citation by the Secretary of the Navy. It also participated in two Combined Arms Exercises in 29 Palms, CA.

In 1984, HMH-772 was at MCCRES in Yuma, AZ, and the following year, participated in RESPIBLEX-EC 85, a Reserve Amphibious Landing Exercise at Bogue Field, NC aboard the USS Guadalcanal. In 1986, the squadron took part in two CAXs at 29 Palms, CA. and in 1987 in MCCRES, conducted at Yuma, AZ. From 1989 to 1991, the squadron was deployed to Pensacola, FL for ATD, and to Quantico, VA in support of Officers Candidate School, the Basic School, and Infantry Officers Course. The squadron also started Viking Strike Exercise.

In 1991, HMH-772 was mobilized for eight months after the Kuwaiti Liberation in support of the Unit Deployment Program. It then joined with HMH-772(-) from Dallas, TX and deployed to the 2d MAW in New River, NC, the 3d MAW in Tustin, CA, and the 1st MAW in Okinawa, Japan. The squadron conducted evacuation operations following the eruption of Mt. Pinatuba in the Philippines. HMH-772 then transitioned to the CH-53D aircraft.

Between 1993-1995, the squadron transitioned to the RH-53D helicopter and took part in Exercise Pinnacle Advance in Yuma, AZ and 29 Palms, CA.

Between 1995-1997, the squadron was at New River, NC, took part in Cold Weather Training at Camp Dawson. The squadron was deployed to Battle Griffin in Norway, CAX 7/8 -97 29 Palms, CA. The squadron also transitioned to the CH-53E helicopter.

The Mission of HMH-772 is to provide the Active Component a Combat Ready Force to augment and reinforce regular forces in Major Regional Contingency (MRC) and to provide relief to these forces during times of high tempo operations. Training must be such that this integration is seamless. Additionally, HMH-772 will reach out to the community in which it serves to tell the Marine Corps story, establish a civilian support base, and when so tasked, to provide assistance to the community during emergencies or disaster relief.
