The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, is a unique unit that is responsible for performing aerial weather reconnaissance on a routine basis. It is the only organization in the world that performs this type of mission. The Hurricane Hunters, as they are commonly known, are responsible for recruiting, organizing, and training personnel to provide surveillance of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and central Pacific Ocean for the National Hurricane Center in Miami. The unit also conducts winter storm missions along the east and west coasts of the United States. The Hurricane Hunters use 10 WC-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which are equipped with specialized meteorological instruments, to perform their missions. The WC-130J is the next generation of aircraft designed for weather reconnaissance, and it is expected to be in service well into the 21st century.
