The 317th Airlift Wing (317 AW) is a unit of the United States Air Force based at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas. It operates under the Air Mobility Command’s Eighteenth Air Force and serves as a tenant unit at Dyess AFB, which is controlled by the 7th Bomb Wing of the Air Force Global Strike Command. The unit was previously known as the 317th Airlift Group but was redesignated as the 317th Airlift Wing in July 2017. The 317 AW specializes in “tactical” airlift and flies the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. The unit has been continuously deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism since 2003, including in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and supporting other Air Expeditionary units around the world. Its predecessor, the 317th Troop Carrier Group, was one of the most highly decorated troop carrier units of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
